St. Petersburg

Our first day in St. Petersburg was really nice. So far, I find it much more enjoyable than Moscow. It feels closer to the other European cities I so enjoy. The Hermitage is closed on Mondays, so we walked along Nevsky Prospect and explored the area around our hotel. As we were walking we saw the monumental Kazan Cathedral.

We walked in just as a small service was taking place. I have never witnessed a Greek Orthodox service, but I hope they are all as lovely as what I heard today. The priests sang the prayers in the most beautiful harmony. The interior of this 19th century church did not move me as the amazing painted interiors of the 16th century churches of the Kremlin. It was lovely to see a functioning church, though.

Our hotel is so close to the Hermitage that we walked around there for a bit. Compared to Moscow, it seems as if we have everything to ourselves here!

Our hotel is on a little canal.
